About Languedoc

Languedoc is one of France's most beautiful regions as it encompasses the Hrault, Aude, Gard and Pyrnes-Orientalesdepartments. It is also home tosouthern France's best cuisine. Languedochas an enormous amount to offer - gorgeous and varied landscapes, aMediterraneanclimatethat offers over 300 days of sun a year, a huge range of sightseeing attractions and sporting opportunities and of course, a wide range of charming French restaurants serving the area's increasingly excellent wines.

The terrain here is surprisingly diverse, with long, wide sandy beaches (unlike Provence), vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, and dramatic rocky escarpments rising above the region's herby garrigue -all dotted with traditional southern French villages.

Languedocis particularly blessed with things to do and see - from the enormous 'La Cite' medieval fortress atCarcassonneto the green and tranquilCanal du Midi- both now designated as official UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Added to this are the Cathar castles perched high on cliffs, the Roman Pont du Gard, and scores of beautiful Romanesque and Medieval churches and abbeys.

For lovers of the outdoors, the varied coutryside and climate create the ideal environment for activities such as walking, hiking, mountain- and trail-biking and canoeing.
